Why You Should Try A Menstrual Cup

Menstrual cups have been on the rise the past years and I would say that there is a lot of hype around them. So many people share their love for them and I am definitely joining in on the praise. A method to deal with periods that involves no waste? No wasteful pads, no chemically filled tampons? Count me in! I have always hated the common period products; pads were itchy and I hated tampons, I don't know exactly why I just did. They feel unsafe and I know it's rare but TSS was always in the back of my mind  before inserting the white bastard. Menstrual cups are the way to go!

So, why are the menstrual cups so amazing?

Better for the environment
One of the many reasons I bought a menstrual cup was to align my period with my values of minimizing waste, especially plastic. I used pads before the menstrual cup and one pad is the equivalent of 4 plastic bags - it doesn't quite make sense to quite the plastic bags and then use plastic that equals 4 of them whenever I opened a pad, does it? With the menstrual cup, no plastic is going into our environment and polluting the hell out of it. Menstrual cups are better for the environment.

A plastic free period
When I am done with my period after using the menstrual cup the only waste I have produced is water. No plastic going into the bin beside my toilet ending up god knows where. I cannot even begin to describe the feeling I had after my first plastic free period. It felt so amazing! To be honest I was actually liberating to be free of 1-2 plastic bags filled with more plastic. Menstrual cups equals a plastic free period.

Better for your health
A thing I learned last year was that companies that make pads and tampons are not required to state the toxins, pesticides and other nasty stuff in their products on the packaging. Are the products you use completely white? Then they have been bleached. Are the products you use not organic? Then pesticides, GMO and other toxics have been used during the process of growing the cotton and making the product. Yes, all of this so close if not inside our body, the most sensitive place you can find. Menstrual cups are better for your health.

It is cheaper
Yes, a menstrual cup can definitely seem expensive when you go to buy it. But keep in mind that it lasts up to 10 years if not more if you take good care of it. A one time purchase for ten years instead of new pads or tampons every few months. A menstrual cup is definitely not that expensive anymore when you think about that. A cup is also 'cheaper' for the earth to produce when it comes to the needed resources to make tampons and pads.

You forget your period
I have had days on my period while using the cup where I completely forgot that I was on my period. When the cup is inserted correctly I cannot feel it at all. And because I only have to empty it every 10 hours it feels like a normal day which is incredibly awesome whereas with pads and tampons I found myself constantly needing to check if they needed to be changed. With a menstrual cup I forget my period.

Easy to use (once you get the hang of it)
I am going to be honest; it was hard for me to get used to the cup when I first started using it and to be able to get it right - but I never gave up. There is a transitioning period (lol) and in the beginning it can feel a bit overwhelming just like starting anything new can be. It is super easy to use once I got the hang of it and the more I use it the easier it is to insert so I would definitely recommend to keep trying if you struggle. I have a post with how I got it to work - click here. A menstrual cup will get easier to manage over time.

Get to know your body
When using a menstrual cup you get really close to your body and lower stomach area. This is something I have been enjoying because it is so cool to get to know it; how long is my cervix, the best way to insert the cup, what kinds of fluids there are other than blood and so much more. This might sound weird to some but after using the cup I am actually starting to not hate my period which I used to do pretty much since the first time I experienced it. A menstrual cup will help you get closer to your body.

These are some of the reasons why I love the menstrual cup and why I would highly recommend you checking it out and try it for yourself because it is truly life changing. The cup I use is from OrganiCup and you can learn more about it and how I use it here.
